I'm not sure why, but my time came in slower than I expected at 8:50. I didn't feel super strong, but I didn't feel horrible either. I did feel like I could probably have gone faster on a better day. Maybe it was the fact that I was doing this after a day of work and an hour and a half drive to the fitness center. Taking all this into account, I figured that I could probably swim around an 8:30 on race day so that is what I submitted.
After swimming this, I felt like it would be a waste for me to come all of this way without getting a little more work in. I decided to do a couple of 100 meter intervals in the pool at about a 90% effort. This felt great and was tough work. Still not satisfied, I decided to run the race course (5k) just to familiarize myself with it again. After all that swimming, I was happy with my 29:28 on the run. Didn't have to stop and walk and maintained a steady pace (not fast or slow). I had originally planned on taking it a little easier today to start my taper, but the opportunity came up so I figured I would go for it. I still have Tuesday through Friday to taper.
