Started today putting on my Asics only to decide to go out in the Merrill's and make a decent zone 2 form run. Went a full 5k this time in them and barely broke a sweat. Of course my time was pretty slow, but speed was not the focus of this run. Ran an 11:19 pace, but managed to keep my heart rate under 150 pretty much the whole way. Average was 146. If I had been in the Asics I think I could have easily run this way for 6 or 7 miles. The Merrill's always work the legs more and I didn't think I should try to push it too much so I stopped at 3.11 miles vs. the previous long of 2.56 miles in them. Have started thinking of my speed workouts and what I might do. I swear that when I ran bleachers in high school and college that it is what made me so fast so I will probably work them in at some point. Will also work in speed work on the track in the near future. Will have to ease into this though as I know that the more explosive workouts can put me at a greater risk of injury. Have a triathlon in a week and a half so won't go too crazy with this just yet, but should be able to start easing into it. For today, was very happy with this run.
